Do I need experience to start?
Most people who walk through our doors have zero martial arts experience, and that’s completely normal. Our classes are coach-led, fundamentals-focused, and structured so you can learn safely and confidently from day one. You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or coordinated — you just need to show up, and we’ll take care of the rest.
Is SBG Niagara really beginner-friendly?
Yes — by design, not by accident. We don’t throw beginners into the deep end. Our system is a structured curriculum that prioritizes fundamentals, safety, and understanding why things work. You’ll never be expected to “keep up” or prove yourself. Progress comes from consistency, not intensity.
Are Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Kickboxing/MMA safe for beginners?
Absolutely — when it’s taught the right way. Safety comes first here. Our classes emphasize control, technique, and intelligent training. You’ll learn how to protect yourself and your training partners while still challenging yourself. Progress should never come at the cost of unnecessary injury.
Do I have to be competitive to train here?
Not at all. While we support competition for those who want it, most of our members train for confidence, fitness, self-defense, and personal growth. Whether your goal is stress relief or skill development, you’ll fit right in.
Are your instructors certified and experienced?
Yes — and more than certified, our coaches are highly qualified and deeply experienced. Our team brings decades of real coaching, competition, and teaching experience across Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, striking, and MMA. You’ll be guided by coaches who know how to teach safely, clearly, and effectively — especially to beginners.
What if I’m out of shape or nervous to start?
That’s completely normal — and incredibly common. Feeling nervous usually means you care. Our coaches and members remember what it felt like to start, and we take pride in creating a welcoming, pressure-free environment where you train at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and build confidence step by step.
What makes SBG Niagara different from other gyms?
We’re not just a place to train — we’re a tribe. At SBG Niagara, you’re coached, not crowded. Our instructors know your name, your goals, and exactly when to push or pull back. We focus on long-term growth, low injury risk, and building real skills — all within a supportive, community-first culture.
Will I feel like I belong even if I don’t know anyone?
Yes — belonging starts on day one. You won’t be left standing on the sidelines wondering what to do. Our coaches guide you, our members support you, and you’ll quickly feel part of something bigger than just a workout. Many of our students came in knowing no one — and stayed because they found their people.
Is there a structured curriculum in place for progression and advancement?
Yes. We follow the world-class Straight Blast Gym International curriculum, known globally for its clear structure and strong fundamentals. Every student learns the same core skills in a logical, step-by-step way, so nothing is rushed or skipped. Our focus on fundamentals is what we’re known for — because that’s what builds real confidence, safety, and long-term progress.
How old do I need to be to start?
We train kids, teens, and adults of all ages — our youngest student is 6, and our oldest is 74. From our Growing Gorillas Life Skills Program for kids to adult fundamentals classes, we offer age-appropriate training that meets people where they are — physically and emotionally.
