Parents/Kids FAQ

+ Is martial arts safe for kids?

Yes — when it’s taught the right way. Our kids classes at SBG Niagara are structured, coach-led, and focused on control, awareness, and confidence — not aggression. Safety, respect, and emotional development come before anything else. Kids learn how to move, communicate, and handle challenges in a supportive environment.

+ My child is shy or nervous. Will they be okay?

Absolutely. Many of our kids start out quiet or unsure — that’s normal. We don’t force kids into the spotlight. We build trust first, then confidence follows. Our coaches meet each child where they are and help them grow at their own pace.

+ What happens in my child’s first class?

First classes are simple, welcoming, and pressure-free. We introduce basic movement, a few fun drills, and help them get comfortable. No expectations — just a positive first experience so they leave feeling proud and excited to come back.

+ What if my child struggles with focus or attention?

That’s actually one of the biggest reasons families start. Martial arts gives kids structure, clear expectations, and movement — all of which help improve focus and self-control over time.

+ Will this help with bullying?

Yes — and not in the way most people think. We don’t teach kids to fight bullies. We teach awareness, boundaries, and confidence. Real bully-proofing starts with how a child carries themselves and communicates, and our SAFE Bully Proofing system is the only system taught for over 34 years in school boards throughout St.Catharines and the Niagara Region.

+ How does martial arts help outside the gym?

This is where the biggest impact happens, and why parents bring their children to SBG Niagara. We teach kids how to speak up, handle challenges, stay calm under pressure, and believe in themselves. Parents often notice changes at school, at home, and socially.

+ Do I need experience to start at SBG Niagara?

Not at all. Most people who walk through our doors have never trained before. You don’t need to get in shape first, know what you’re doing, or “tough it out.” Just show up — we’ll guide you from day one.

+ What if I’m out of shape or nervous to start?

You’ll fit right in. A lot of our members felt the exact same way before their first class. We meet you where you are, move at a smart pace, and help you build confidence step by step.

+ Is it safe for beginners?

Yes. Safety is built into how we coach and how we train at SBG Niagara. You’ll learn control, awareness, and technique first — not intensity. Our goal is for you to train consistently and confidently, not walk away beat up.

+ Is SBG Niagara really beginner-friendly?

It’s what we’re known for. We’ve built our programs specifically for people starting from zero. Supportive coaching, structured classes, and a team that wants to see you succeed — that’s the standard here.
